Adults on the spectrum
Yesterday I read an article in a Norwegian newspaper about an adult woman who has autism. Of course I always read articles on autism in the press, so I started reading this also.
It was an interesting article that both described the childhood development of the woman, and no doubt did she had a development trajectory of autism. And she also now clearly described difficulties of autism. But she was employed, had been married and had children, so she it should be OK to label it high-functioning??
The ting that troubled me with this article was some of the descriptions of her lack of reciprocity in social and emotional relations. The article presented this as a kind of “excuse” for events that had gone wrong in her life, even dramatic life-events….
I don´t think it´s appropriate to talk about excuses or guilt in the case of autism and difficulties with reciprocity in social en emotional relations. it makes me kind of sad to read and hear these kinds of descriptions. So I strongly disagrees with this kind of formulations, and hopes that with more information to the general public we will not see this in the future…….
