Picture Exchange Communication System – PECS

January 5th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

I´m preparing a workshop on Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) for later this week. As a behavioral consultant I have done numbers of such workshops for children.  But this time it´s for a grown-up, and the staff. It´s quite sad that persons with disabilities reach adulthood without a functional communication system. Let´s hope I can contribute to do something about this.

But as I do the preparation, the thought of do PECS digital comes back. I consider this every time I´m introducing PECS for somebody, but I still have not made the time to try it out properly.  I did one little try-out some years ago with a boy who got a mini roll-talk, based on a window-based PDA.

We could not get this to work properly, primarily because we missed the exchange-component of PECS, so the boy was “talking” in every direction, and the communication was little functional. And this is the obstacle I´m wondering how to come around.

The Norwegian NAV-office have started some experiments with the use of iPhone, but not as a communication device. I would really like to get some thoughts on this, by comment or email.
